Connections Sculpture
January 27, 2020 – Learning about the different wood working machines: table saw, ban saw, bent and spindle sander. The table saw was most intimidating to me. My project began with cutting all my pieces.
Concept in progress.
February 3, 2020 – Combining wood, metal and stone using a variety of connections: glue, screws, eyelet, wire and chain. The center piece was doubled and glued together. Here clamps hold it together to form the bond. Below the pieces assembled for fit before putting the finishes on each piece.
Cradling Zen Sculpture
February 23, 2020 – My final piece! This sculpture is assymmetrical in design and speaks to capturing and protecting a state of zen. The curvature of wood cradles a suspended white stone swaddled in copper wire adding a sense of balance in design. The raised roof by metal rods further adds a feeling of protection and mimics the elevated platform base. The red stained centerpiece of the sculpture complements the green raised platform and the copper wire, black chain and silver rods add a contemporary, urban quality to the piece.
New Life Fish Sculpture
March 9, 2020 – New Life from common, ordinary recognizable materials or items. Started with aluminum foil to create the basic forms for the sculpture.
Clay over the foil begins the transformation to the fish. Adding part of the bottom of a plastic bottle, forms the tail.
Concept details
March 16, 2020 – With the final form created with clay, its time to paint it and add the details. The base becomes the splashing water and creates the scene of the fish jumping out of water.
Eggshells were used for the bulging eyes, painted and then clear nail polish provides the gloss.
To create the fish’s scales, plastic gallon jugs are cut in pieces, painted and applied in overlapping layers. A final coat of clear nail polish creates a illusion of the wet fish.
March 30, 2020 – From aluminum foil, eggshells and recycled plastic bottle this sculpture was created. An exaggerated mouth and bulging eyes adds a little whimsy to this friendly, little fellow. One can visualize him jumping out and splashing back down into the water.
Wearable Sculpture
April 25, 2020 – Imagination transcends art into wearable fashion in this project. Constructed during the COVID pandemic, with limited resources and materials available: foam core, acrylic paint, tape and glue to bring this concept of a Rubic’s Cube to life. The objective was to simulate the basic principle of solving the puzzle. To do this, three simplified layers were developed in the original color scheme of the cubes, namely red, yellow, blue, orange, white and green. Some thought to the engineering was required to allow for layers to rotate around the body. A circular core with a supporting base and shoulder straps would permit the construction to be wearable and allow for layers to rotate. Finally, to complete the ensemble, a matching headpiece replicating an individual cube completed the look.
